Can the younger generation suffer from cataracts?

Cataracts are increasingly common in Australian society, so much so that the Commonwealth Government has recently begun to offer rebates to allow people in need to obtain cheap cataract surgery. The reason for the growing prevalence of this disease is most likely a result of Australia’s aging population. Cataracts appear far more frequently in people over fifty years of age, and as a particularly large portion of Australian citizens fall into this category, cataracts can be expected to become more common.

But can the younger generation suffer from cataracts? While this is possible, it is also quite unlikely.  Trauma, metabolic disease, infections and genetics increase the likelihood of a patient experiencing cataracts. However, as cataracts are a result of decreasing quality of an ocular lens, it tends to be unusual for younger persons to experience them. This is not to say they cannot contract them in later life, but it is rare for people under fifty years of age.

Fortunately for younger people affected by cataracts, its increasing commonality means cataract surgery is more widely available than ever before. Statistics show that cataracts are the leading cause of blindness, resulting in cataract surgery being one of the most widely performed surgeries, worldwide. Even without the government rebate, removing cataracts is relatively affordable. It is also the cause of blindness that is easiest to treat. If you or a loved one is afflicted by cataracts, consider the difference treatment could make- its easier than ever before. Contact the Sydney Cataract Centre today!
